Description
The course focuses on the interpretation and use of one of the least known and most important components of communication. As we know, human communication is made up of a triple structure: verbal communication, gestural communication, and proxemics. Most people assume—incorrectly—that the conviction and strength of their communication and speech come from words, that is, from verbal communication and language. This represents only 30% of communication, while the remaining 60% corresponds to non-verbal or gestural communication, and 10% to proxemics. This means that often, in the use of communication, we waste or fail to properly utilize 70% of our communicative power. In this course, called “Interpretation and Use of Gestural Language,” the aim is to introduce the participant to the mastery of techniques for interpreting and understanding gestural language, both of individuals and the audiences they address. It also includes understanding “gestural phrases” and their levels of coherence with the verbal messages being sent and received, as well as completing the levels of understanding within human communication. Essentially, it seeks to incorporate into understanding the 70% of communication content that is usually lost, while also developing the capacity to interpret the “psychological climate” of others and verify the truthfulness of the messages received. This is part of the ongoing evolution of managing communication.

The program includes two sections considered of utmost importance, related to lie detection, which can be very useful when a complex negotiation is necessary or when exploring controversial issues.
Work Plan | Focus of Each Class
Through six classes, the program focuses on developing social and professional performance skills, both in terms of sensitivity and expressiveness.
On one hand, participants will learn to “read” the meanings of body language, both their own and others’, relating the state of knowledge to the variations arising from the context of observation, and practicing investigative exercises.
On the other hand, students will learn the practice of applying the acquired non-verbal knowledge, and integrating it with effective verbal communication, to professional and social situations. This CNV program also includes content on its application to lie detection, following the theoretical and practical models used by the world’s leading security organizations.
This program constitutes the first academic offering on the science of non-verbal communication in our country and includes content and training on its application to lie detection.
CLASS PLAN
1.Introduction to Non-Verbal Behavior
At this point, we study the basic concepts of non-verbal behavior and emotions, which will serve as the essential foundation for the analysis, as much of our non-verbal behavior results from the expression of our emotions. We analyze the evolution in the research of emotions and the physiology of non-verbal behavior. We study basic emotions and their four different models. We analyze the concepts of emotional expression and recognition through the face, voice, gestures, proxemics, touch, and appearance. We review different scientific studies showing the applicability of non-verbal communication studies in various fields.
2. Analysis of Facial Expressions
In this section of our program, we study facial expression and, in-depth, micro-expressions and subtle expressions. We begin with the definition and basic concepts and verify the practical application of micro-expression analysis. We will study the different facial coding systems to deepen our understanding of the FACS system. We finish the module with a video analysis work, explaining the observed UA’s and their correspondence with basic emotions. The study and practical application of the Non-Verbal Behavior Analysis Matrix (MACNV) will be addressed in its basic version.
3. Gestural, Proxemic, and Prosodic Expression
In this section, we study gestures and postures in non-verbal behavior, both in the upper and lower body. We review and deepen the different concepts of paralanguage and emotional prosody. We analyze the concept of proxemics and its application, verifying the power of spaces. We proceed to demystify gestural analysis, teaching the student to distinguish between scientific and rigorous contributions and those that are not. We practically apply gestural, proxemic, and prosodic analysis, finishing with a video analysis work explaining voice parameters. The study and practical application of the Non-Verbal Behavior Analysis Matrix (MACNV) will be addressed in its advanced version.
4. Non-Verbal Behavior in the Professional Field
We will analyze different areas related to the professional and business world, such as negotiation, commercial relationships, conflict, HR interviews from the perspective of non-verbal behavior, non-verbal behavior in coaching, non-verbal behavior in the doctor-patient relationship, etc.
5. Lie Detection: Part One
We define the basic concepts of lie detection. We study lying in everyday life. We delve into the different content analysis tools currently used by security forces in the most advanced countries for their investigations. We review lie detection through the technical study of facial expression and its application to investigations. We analyze existing scientific studies on lie detection through gestural expression, voice, and writing. We present myths about lie detection and finish with a video analysis work, justifying its truthfulness or not based on the different techniques studied.
6. Lie Detection: Part Two
We delve into the different techniques, theories, and research in the psychology of lying, expanding and complementing the knowledge acquired in the previous module. The psychophysiological evaluation of lying is specifically addressed, and we deepen the various meta-analyses in deception detection.
